Update from Uncle Earl Kawaa on the effort to legalize pa'i 'ai (traditional pounded kalo/taro).

SB101, the bill to "legalize pa'i 'ai" is now out of committee and on it's way for a floor vote.

From Uncle Earl Kawaa:

At 1:38pm today, Senator Josh Green dropped the gavel and called both Houses and Senate members present to order. First on the agenda was our Magnificent Pa'i'ai Bill. All the legislators gathered around the table were feeling very at ease and ready to vote. Senator Maile Shimabukuro, our champion, reiritirated the changes and Senator Josh Green called for the vote. Shimabukuro called the names of the Representatives and Senators who had to vote on the bill. Names called were Herkes, Yamane, Hanohano, Ward, Lee and Wolsey from the House, then Green, Shimabukuro, Sloan and Chun from the Senate. Lee and Wolsey's names were called but were not present. The bill passed and will now move to the floor and to the Governor for his signature.

On the way out I thanked Representative Robert Herkes. He extended his hands and I accepted on behalf of all of us. I saw Representative Yamane in the elevator before the hearing. He said, Where's my Pa'i 'Ai?. I replied, you and Mr. Herkes will get Pa'i 'Ai after the governor signs the bill."
