The Pacific Aquaculture and Coastal Resources Center and the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Marine Science Department are planning “Ocean Day, Hawai‘i 2011” on Saturday, April 2, 2011 from 10 am – 3 pm. Thanks to the efforts of our presenters on the past three events, we have provided a great opportunity for our community to learn about oceans, coastal resources and knowledge, and research related to our island’s ocean resources. With over 500 people attending the first year (2007), 1000 at the 2008 event, and over 1,200 at the last event (2009), Ocean Day Hawai‘i will again be an annual event at our Keaukaha Pacific Aquaculture and Coastal Resources Center (PACRC) facility.
It promises to be a fun-filled, educational community outreach event, open to everyone. The aims of “Ocean Day, Hawai‘i” are to: 1) Raise public awareness of the impact people have on the ocean environment; 2) Promote ways of living that favor conservation of marine habitats and sustainability of resources in a culturally sensitive way; and 3) Communicate the outcomes of current ocean and coastal research, management and education efforts here in Hawai‘i.
We would like to invite you to participate in this exciting event as a booth presenter. As for our previous events, presenters are allocated a booth to display hands-on, interactive educational materials. Each both should have their own interactive activity.
We received lots of feedback from our previous OD events about how great the interactive tables and displays were for young and old alike. We will again have a contest for Ocean Day Presenters. Prizes will be given at the end of the event in the following three categories: Best Message, Most Interactive and People’s Choice. We hope this will encourage even more creative and interactive presentations & displays!
If you are able to join us for the day, please return the form included here as soon as possible. Priority will be given to requests received by: Friday, March 18th. If you have questions, please contact Erika Perry at hperry@hawaii.edu or 933-0707.
We look forward to hearing that you can be part of this important event for Hawaii’s coastal and marine conservation. Please share this information with your colleagues and any other groups that you think would be interested in participating in this event.
