Enhancing Nearshore Marine Resources Management through Community Involvement
During the months of June and July, a series of eight (8) community information and training sessions will take place on Hawaii Island, Maui, Oahu and Kauai. The training will feature a newly standardized Makai Watch volunteer incident observation and reporting program targeted toward volunteers interested in assisting the DLNR to effectively manage Hawaii’s nearshore marine resources by serving as the ‘eyes and ears’ of Conservation Enforcement in the community.
The first training in the series will be held at 05:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the Kaunoa Senior Center (788 Pauoa Street) in Lahaina, Hawaii. To RSVP for this free training event, please contact Liz Foote at Lfoote@coral.org or (808) 669-9062.
The Makai Watch Program is a partnership effort between the State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), non-governmental organizations including The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Hawaii Community Stewardship Network (HCSN), Hawaii Wildlife Fund (HWF), Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL), Project S.E.A.-Link and several other community-based organizations whose goal is to enhance the management of near-shore marine resources by providing community members opportunities for direct involvement in management activities.
