Discussing the Kyo-Ya Expansion - Town Square Radio on HPR
For 35 years, development in Waikiki has operated under zoning laws curtailing the height of buildings while providing a specified setback along the beachfront. That's now going out the window say a coalition of environmental group. Last week they collectively filed an appeal to the Department of Planning and permitting's decision to grant a variance to Kyo-Ya Hotels and Resorts allowing a tripling of the Moana's diamond head tower. Host Beth-Ann Kozlovich is joined in the studio, representing the coalition of groups who filed the appeal, Marti Townsend, Program Director at KAHEA. Also in the studio and not a part of the appeal, Scott Wilson, a licensed architect on the board of directors of AIA Honolulu Chapter, and Patrick Onishi, an architect and part-time faculty member at UH School of Architecture's Community Design and Sustainable Research Program.
